Library Science Education

Ionel Enache
- New (and old) Problems of Library Science Education and of Libraries

For over 20 years, the Romanian education system has had to deal with the same problems: underfunding, lack of motivation, bureaucracy, the instability of the legal system, a decline in the youth’s interest in higher education. Libraries also face the same problems. In addition to this, there are other issues, as well, such as the lack of professional managers, poor knowledge of management and marketing methods and techniques, failure to comply with the principles of efficient work organization, lack of work norms and of certain methodologies to be used in recruiting, selecting, promoting and evaluating staff performance and so on.

Huriye «olaklar, Işıl İlknur Sert - The education of medical librarians in evidence-based information services: a model of active learning

Evidence-based practice stems from clinical approaches which are used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries’ medical practices. This area is new in Turkey, too. Turkey needs some lessons about evidence-based practice in Departments of Information and Records Management. This paper, examining the examples in various other countries, presents a model for including the evidence-based information services, which are based on research done in the fields of health and medicine and especially of dentistry, within the contents of the already existing courses in education of librarianship in Turkey. The paper depicts the aims and fields of use of evidence-based information services and their contribution to active learning; examines the education of this subject in various other countries and shows its place in Turkey, and presents a model for the improvement of this education. It is proved that the education of the librarians who will give evidence-based information services both with special practices within the already existing courses or with optional courses given especially for this aim in education of librarianship will contribute considerably to active learning in dentistry.

In this context, we shall try to identify the factors leading to the need to use electronic resources, we shall analyze the role played by the university library in increasing the efficiency of the access to this type of resources (implicitly, instructing the users), we shall suggest ways of collaboration between academics and librarians etc. From a managerial perspective, we shall analyze a few important aspects that one needs to consider when making the decision of buying or not an electronic resource: selection, type of acquisition, legality, monitoring the usefulness etc.

In 2013, 150 years were celebrated since the establishment of the Faculty of Letters of Bucharest, and, in this context, this article presents a brief history of the Library of this prestigious institution in Romania. Its beginnings are at the end of the nineteenth century, when a specialized library was formed in the Department of Slavic Languages within the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. The books donation in 1892 to Slavic seminar, and subsequent efforts of Professor Ioan Bogdan, Dean of the Faculty, led to the opening in 1907 of the Library of the Faculty, and the constant development of the Library recorded over more than a century of existence.
